ROYAL DUTCH POSTNL: LONG-TERM VALUE OF HVR  INTEGRATION

Strategic Middleware

With their decentralized data-infrastructure, and a growing need for high volume data replication, Royal PostNL of the Netherlands took a strategic decision in initiating the development of HVR. "Royal PostNL is a cost-driven service provider in logistics", says IT-Manager Frank Knot. "In order to be successful, we manage huge amounts of often complex data traffic within our organization. For example for tracking & tracing purposes, but also for operating up-to-date zip code databases.

Robust and Scalable

When we defined our key conditions for a replicator to fit the needs of our present and future data environment, we concluded that the replicator we needed did not yet exist. Available replicators lacked robustness and the ability to handle huge data volumes."

ATOS SEEKS RELIABLE SOLUTIONS TO REACH MAXIMUM CUSTOMER VALUE

Atos

Atos Case Story (313 Kb)
Atos runs a highly successful outsourcing business. They manage core IT infrastructures, including data-centers, desktop support, server farms and network communication systems. They provide 24x7 "follow the sun" infrastructure support through their global network, and the company has unrivalled experience in major roll-out programs covering complex and multi-site solutions.

Service Desk

Like many others in the market, Atos makes use of Unicenter Service Desk by CA. HVR was developed to be fully operational with Unicenter Service Desk. In fact, a ready-made solution was made for easy and fast replication between Service Desk databases.

Continuous Service Delivery Model

HVR Integration ExampleAnalysts of Atos use Unicenter Service Desk to work according to international process standards, like Atos Origin's ITIL based Continuous Service Delivery Model (CSDM). Through the use of the HVR its Data Ware-house is filled with data from the production databases of Service Desk. The updating of this Data Warehouse had to occur near real time, like any replicating assignment that is performed by the HVR. The HVR also provides a standby database for high availability.

As Cees Geerts, from Atos' Architecture and Security says: 'There are three things, which I particularly like about the HVR: its speed, its flexibility and its robustness. The HVR is truly reliable at any speed. And I must say: though HVR Software is but a small company, their service is impeccable.'

HVR PROVIDES REAL TIME REPLICATION FOR U. S. COAST GUARD

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is one of the country's five armed services. In times of peace USCG operates as part of the Department of Homeland Security, serving as the nation's front-line agency for enforcing laws at sea, protecting the coastline and ports, and saving life. In times of war, or on direction of the President, USCG serves under the Navy Department.

According to Commander Peter Weddington of USCG, the technology of HVR was convincing from the start. 'But we had our doubts about the limited size of HVR Software and the time difference between our office and Europe', he explains. 'You see, the HVR may work well, but if some-thing goes wrong with a mission critical system like ours, you want to be served swiftly.

Robust and Reliable

Example Technical expert Steve Peck says: "HVR has proven to be very robust and reliable. And in fact the same goes for HVR Software itself. HVR Software was always very alert and came up with patches that would solve our problems within 24 hours.'We are all amazed by the performance of the HVR'. Commander Weddington adds. 'It performed near flawlessly from the very beginning. I would recommend HVR to organizations that seek excellent replicating solutions.'

TELECOM OPERATOR'S REACHES "FIVE NINE" AVAILABILITY WITH HVR

Any telecom operator that provides prepaid services to customers needs a billing system that is highly reliable and accurate. The goal is 99.999% availability- "five nine". After all: if the billing system is down, the company might be giving away profitable time. With subscribers to a service, or post billing system, this problem is less threatening. Should the billing system go down, the company can always continue to register any phone calls and charge the costs afterwards. With prepaid services, reliability and availability of the billing system is of strategic importance.

This telecom operator provides prepaid services which rely on a trustworthy Ingres-based billing system. Robustness is guaranteed thanks to the hot standby implementation with HVR.

GLOBALCOLLECT FINDS RECIPE FOR SUCCESS IN INGRES AND HVR

International payment services provider GlobalCollect is one of those few companies for which the phrase mission critical really does have currency. Dependable IT systems that perform faultlessly 24x7 are not just important to its business, they're absolutely critical. Just ask the costumers and vendors who last year depended on GlobalCollect to make more than 40 million payments and conduct in excess of 80 million transactions collectively worth over $ 1.5 billion.

Leader in Electronic Payment Processing

A solid record of reliability and succes has helped GlobalCollect archieve year-on-year growth and become a leader in electronic payment processing. Its clients include big names like KLM, Skype, Vodafone, Nike, FT, Reuters, Sony and Apple iTunes. It is by using GlobalCollect's services that these companies can offer their telephone, Internet and mail order customers a slick and efficient way of making customer-not-present purchases of goods ranging from tunes and tickets through to software and computers.

Best of Breed Suppliers

Given the emphasis on systems availability, it's not surprising that when GlobalCollect itself goes shopping for IT, it does so with very serious intent indeed. The list reads like a roll call of the industry's best of breed suppliers: Computers - Sun, HP.Networks - Cisco, Nortel. Operating systems: Unix, Linux, Windows. And forming the all-important back office is the Busniess Open Source database Ingres along with the companion database replication tool HVR from HVR Software bv.
