Modernizing Multiple Legacy Systems for Real-Time Analytics with Snowflake and HVR
PITT OHIO improved operational efficiencies and unlocked new business value by modernizing multiple legacy applications
Are you finding it difficult to find a replication solution that fits your whole environment? That’s one of the many issues PITT OHIO faced while trying to modernize multiple legacy systems for real-time data access, analytics, and reporting. PITT OHIO, a family-owned transportation company headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, established its legacy over 40 years ago with its Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) service. Since then, the organization has expanded to provide transportation, logistics, freight transportation, ground services, and supply chain solutions across North America.
As a transportation company, PITT OHIO must maintain a high level of customer service. But with its data environment, they didn’t have the flexibility to adopt a solution that could connect all of its sources to unlock business insight such as on-time percentages for their deliveries or overall service performance.
The support structure for native database replication is isolated into two versions. Since PITT OHIO supports many legacy applications, with some dating back to 2005, they would have had to incorporate multiple distribution servers and replication modes to handle the wide environment and bring all of the data into one place. Also, PITT OHIO’s production database environment was overloaded, as it served the production application workload and the majority of its analytical workloads, so they needed a replication solution that wouldn’t impact the databases.
To get past the limitations of its current relational database and the narrow replication environment, PITT OHIO researched solutions and selected HVR for its ability to support all of its technical and future business needs. Almost immediately, HVR simplified the day-to-day management by consolidating workloads and isolating its analytical processing to a dedicated environment.
With HVR’s distributed, flexible and modular architecture, changes from the transaction logs were read as close to the source as possible for high performance and little to no impact and no additional resources. More importantly, it gave PITT OHIO a central point of control. It simplified support and allowed them to look at all of its replication from a single source.
Before HVR, PITT OHIO had to follow a series of processes to troubleshoot table errors. This impacted the timeliness of its service agreements and reports that support mission-critical objectives. Now, when a user has questions about a report or missing data, they can go straight to the HVR Management Console to find and fix the problem right away.
Although HVR solved many of PITT OHIO’s immediate concerns, it also provided them with a stable foundation to seamlessly and efficiently adopt the cloud. PITT OHIO leverages HVR to replicate data to Snowflake’s Data Cloud. Considering PITT OHIO’s data on-prem is transactional, HVR aggregates all of the changes captured from the sources and integrates them into Snowflake, allowing PITT OHIO to be more conservative with its consumption in the cloud, ultimately providing cost-saving benefits.
With real-time data, they can focus on the logical side of business use cases and provide stakeholders information—up to the minute—on how well the business is performing.
PITT OHIO started with a small use case of about 50 tables. Today, PITT OHIO has 47 HVR channels, replicating 384 production tables into its analytical environment. The 47 channels bring data back from 23 different databases. On average, each day, PITT OHIO’s HVR environment integrates about 6 million table changes.
Data is driving most business in today’s digital world, and those that aren’t realizing the full potential of their data will fall behind. As PITT OHIO prepares for increases in demand, they’ll be able to utilize HVR, Snowflake, and Microsoft’s BI platform to provide broader solutions to business users, customers, partners, and sister companies.
