How the leading gift provider is leveraging HVR and Snowflake to create a single cloud-based data warehouse for broader analytics across its family of brands

 

 

1-800-FLOWERS.COM, Inc. is a one-stop gifting destination featuring a family of more than a dozen brands, including 1-800-Flowers.com®, Harry & David®, and The Popcorn Factory®, among others. With such a large brand portfolio of brands, the IT team sought to address the challenges of integrating and accessing data from disparate on-premise sources in order to maintain a 360-degree view of their customers across the enterprise. Furthermore, the company wanted to move to cloud services given their need to centralize data from across their enterprise.

1-800-FLOWERS.COM, Inc. now leverages HVR’s real-time replication solution and Snowflake’s cloud-based data warehouse to import and integrate data across many different sources into a single, cloud-based data warehouse. We sat down with 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, Inc. to discuss how they selected HVR and Snowflake, what they hoped to achieve with the joint solution and the benefits they experienced.

What were the business challenges you hoped to address that caused you to search for a solution?

At 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, Inc., we remain continually focused on finding new ways to solve more of our customers’ gifting needs and provide a best-in-class customer experience.

With a portfolio of more than a dozen brands and many individual sources of data, our IT team needed to address the complexities in compiling and assessing data from across the enterprise. We wanted to identify a fast, efficient, and secure way to house our data in a single repository.

Why did you select HVR and Snowflake rather than another solution?

As a company, we have a proven track record of innovation and a reputation for embracing new and emerging technologies. With our ongoing focus on providing a best-in-class experience to customers, it was important that we chose to partner with a solution provider that also has a best-in-class reputation.

Among the solutions available to us, HVR and Snowflake had several differentiating features that we found useful to our business, such as the ability to easily compare and analyze data. Additionally, their technology could seamlessly support our data warehouse operation without disrupting our normal everyday processes.

Which teams within 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, Inc. are using Snowflake, and how are they using it? 

We’re primarily using Snowflake’s cloud-built data platform for 1-800-Flowers.com, our floral brand. However, as we work to finalize our new enterprise data warehouse, we’ve already begun leveraging this platform for some of our other brands. Snowflake allows us to store and analyze data using cloud-based software, and these resources have already been incredibly useful to our marketing, data science, florist relations, and customer relations teams.

How are your teams using HVR?

We use HVR to exchange data between our various transactional systems and marketing databases. These will ultimately live in the enterprise data warehouse to support our Celebrations platform – the intuitive hybrid platform that houses our portfolio of more than a dozen gifting brands and effectively positions us as a one-stop gifting destination for all celebratory and gifting occasions.

With such a diverse customer base and so many popular brands in the 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, Inc. portfolio, HVR’s real-time integration, which ensures any and all system changes we make are consistent and updated simultaneously across all of our applications and database, is important to our business. As we work to build a true enterprise data warehouse, this level of accuracy is invaluable to our teams.

What qualitative results have you achieved with help from HVR and Snowflake?

Although this project is still underway, several enterprise and brand teams have already benefited from having better visibility across the business. We’ve experienced easier access to data and improved metrics for assessing this data. Now, the vast majority of our customer information is being aggregated onto a single, comprehensive platform, which is already allowing for more consistent reporting across the enterprise.

In leveraging HVR and Snowflake’s technology, we’re now establishing a cloud-based data warehouse that supports the entire enterprise, making it easier for us to develop a deeper understanding of our customers. With HVR and Snowflake, we can now seamlessly import, compile, and access data from across our family of brands into a single cloud-based platform quickly, safely, and efficiently.

We take pride in bold and big, forward-thinking ideas – and those trail-blazing concepts can be the most challenging to manifest. With a streamlined, efficient solution for compiling and assessing data, even groups outside of our technology team have been able to dig deeper to create meaningful communications that are resonating with and engaging our customers.
